A validated farming package raises water-efficient output

Energy, climate and resourcesUpside scenario

Multi-country field trials validate a transferable package of climate-resilient staple varieties, precision irrigation and soil management. Linked agreements on seed approval, smallholder finance and extension start simultaneous deployment across the major low-yield regions. Within four growing seasons, adopting farms raise staple output by 25 per cent and cut water use per tonne by 30 per cent. Improved storage preserves the additional harvest and international staple prices fall 15 per cent. Food importers and adopting farmers gain; high-cost exporters and farmers without access to finance or seed lose relative income. The test for each nation is affordable smallholder adoption without greater land concentration, exclusion from seed access or higher total water withdrawals.
